Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 869 bankruptcies (807 bankruptcies in the same month of the previous year, up 7.7% year-on-year), exceeding the figure for the same month of the previous year for the first time in two months. Highest figure for June in the past 10 years. The number of bankruptcies each month in 2025 has exceeded 800, except in February, and has remained high.
- ■The total amount of liabilities came to 98,558 million yen (107,918 million yen in the same month of the previous year, down 8.7%), marking the second consecutive month of year-on-year decrease. Kimitsu Rockwool Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of rock wool used in building insulation, topped the list of liabilities with 8,944 million yen.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies increased year-on-year in four of seven industries. The service industry had the most cases (to 241 from 214 in the same month last year, up 12.6%), marking the second-highest number of cases for the month of June after 2009 (242). The transport and communication industry (to 39 from 47 bankruptcies in the same month of the previous year, down 17.0%) saw the figure fall below the same month of the previous year for eight consecutive months.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 725, marking the first year-on-year increase in two months.
- ■By type, there were 809 bankruptcies, the most common form, marking the first year-on-year increase in two months.
- ■By size of liabilities, bankruptcies of companies with liabilities of less than 50 million yen were the most common (559 cases). The ratio of these to all forms of bankruptcy exceeded 60% for seven consecutive months, and small-scale bankruptcies continued to account for the majority.
- ■By business history, there were 277 bankruptcies of companies that had existed for “30 years or more,” the most common, and this exceeded the previous year’s figure for the first time in three months.
- ■By region, six of nine regions experienced year-on-year increases. The largest rate of increase was in Hokuriku (to 33 bankruptcies from 26 in the same month last year, up 26.9%), the fourth-highest number of bankruptcies for June. In total, 22 prefectures saw increases year-on-year.
